Virtual charity lunch, Missio campaign, retreat day

Latest news from across the Diocese of East Anglia includes a virtual charity lunch, a Shrove Tuesday pancake fundraiser, and an online Lenten retreat.

Aid to the Church in Need is organising a virtual Lenten Sunday lunch to support a project in Lebanon. It will take place on Youtube on March 21, beginning at 1pm.

This virtual lunch will be raising money for a project in Lebanon called the St John The Merciful Table. This serves daily meals to over 1,000 Christians in and around the city of Zahle. Many of these families are refugees from Syria or local people who have lost their livelihoods because of the national financial crisis or the pandemic.

More information on how the event works can be found here: acnuk.org/event/acn-virtual-sunday-lunch/

Missio is putting on a fundraising event on Pancake Day, February 16.

Unsurprisingly, Missio’s income, like that of many charities, has taken a hit. Meanwhile Covid has brought huge challenges to communities globally that are poor or in need. Many sisters and brothers overseas have lost their income, including many missionaries who live in their communities and depend on small stipends and donations to survive.

Missio is inviting everyone to join an online “Flipping Fantastic Fundraiser”. Claire Colleran, Mission Together’s Resource Coordinator says:

“We’re encouraging people to be as creative as possible: maybe you can have a Zoom flip and challenge aunties, uncles or grandparents, or compete with friends from school or college. Smaller children can make felt or cloth pancakes to flip. It’s a great way to support Missio and eat delicious pancakes before Lent begins.”

Margaret-Mary McFadyen, spirituality representative for the Diocese, is organising a retreat day to prepare for Lent called ‘Positive Penance’.

It will be inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius and will take place on Saturday February 13 on Zoom.

The Catholic Association is organising an online rosary on Thursday February 11, the Feast of  Our Lady of Lourdes. This is also the World Day of Prayer for the Sick.

Clifton Diocese is hosting a live streamed Mass at 7pm which will be followed by a Catholic Association Rosary, led by Father Nicholas King SJ.
