Bishop celebrates Midnight Mass at St John’s Cathedral

Bishop Peter Collins celebrated a solemn pontifical Midnight Mass on Christmas Day at a packed St John’s Cathedral in Norwich.

He greeted the baby Jesus and carried him in procession to the crib in St Joseph’s Chapel in the cathedral.

“Today marks the beginning of a Holy Year, as this night Pope Francis has opened a Holy Door in the Basilica of St Peter in Rome,” said Bishop Peter in his homily. “Next Sunday (December 29), on the Feast of the Holy Family, every diocese across the universal church will celebrate the start of each diocesan participation in the pilgrimage which is the Holy Year,” said Bishop Peter.

“We are Pilgrims of Hope – hope addressed to ourselves and those whom we love. Hope that is addressed to the whole world.

“As Pilgrims of Hope we are called upon to address the world and say: “Fear not, behold we bring you Good News of great joy, we bring you news of peace, peace that cannot be shattered despite man’s worst efforts. Of the increase of His government and of peace, there will be no end.”
