CAFOD walkers celebrate Climate Sunday at Blickling

Parishioners from North Walsham, Aylsham and Hoveton celebrated Climate Sunday with a beautiful walk on the Blickling estate. Jane Crone from CAFOD reports.

The ecumenical Climate Sunday initiative calls on local churches across Great Britain and Ireland to hold a climate-focused service on any Sunday before the COP26 climate conference in November.

The Parish of North Walsham, Aylsham and Hoveton covers a large area to the north of Norwich. Clare Hardie explained that despite the challenges of belonging to a scattered, rural community, that they found creative ways of celebrating the Season of Creation together.

Father James Walsh celebrated Mass in each of our three churches using CAFOD prayers for the Season of Creation. In the afternoon members of the parish held a Creation Walk in Blickling Park, Aylsham where we prayed the Novena to St. Francis for a World Under Threat and the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary for the Care of Creation as we walked for two miles through the beautiful trees and meadows of the Park.

“We were blessed with a warm and sunny afternoon and the parish walkers were joined by several Secular Franciscans, members of the Norwich Pax et Bonum Fraternity, and a couple who were on holiday in the area.”

Mary Rando and her husband live at the other end of the parish, so walked in solidarity with their fellow parishioners in the beautiful Broadland area.

“Before setting out on our three-mile walk, my husband Sergio and I sat in our lovely garden and said the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary that you had sent in your communication,” she said. “We then proceeded on our walk, praying as we went, the Novena to St Francis for a World under threat.

“We remarked on and appreciated all the wonderful nature around us. The sights and sounds of birds, bees on the flowers of the ivy with its glossy green leaves, and more fluttering butterflies (mostly red admirals) than I have ever seen in one place at one time. This was a wonderful experience, spiritual and uplifting.”

If you’d like to find out more about Climate Sunday resources take a look at their excellent website. CAFOD have plenty of resources for the Season-of-Creation, family-prayer-ideas and a Care-of-creation-rosary. Finally, did you know 18 to 26 September is Great Big Green Week the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK?
